Marriage is a value

Marriage is the highest form of unconditional trust and devotion. It is a life alliance that provides the most secure basis for having and raising children.
According to the surveys of the Mária Kopp Institute for Demography and Families (KINCS), even today, nine out of ten Hungarians consider marriage to be the best relationship form, and the majority of young people wish to live in marriage.

The Marriage Week initiative started in England more than two decades ago and draws attention to the importance of marriage and family for one week each year. Marriage is the highest form of unconditional trust and devotion between a man and a woman, providing the most secure basis for having and raising children. The Hungarostudy research examining the mental state of Hungarians clearly reveals that marriage is an important health protective factor, both physically and psychologically, because those who are married usually live longer, consider themselves happier and more satisfied than single people.

Although the institution of marriage is attacked and relativized countless times today, by considering it an outdated form of relationship, KINCS research proves that even today, nine out of ten Hungarians consider marriage to be the best relationship form. The majority of young people want to live in marriage, which explains why a significant part of cohabiting partnerships also end in marriage. This is confirmed by the fact that the number of marriages has increased significantly by about 15 thousand compared to 2010. According to a previous survey by the Mária Kopp Institute, young people under the age of 30 are pro-marriage, 75 percent of the single people surveyed plan to get married in the future. Today, three-quarters of children are born married, while only one in two newborns had married parents before.

Therefore, the institution of marriage is still widely accepted today, which is why it is worth talking about. As the namesake of our institute, Prof. Dr. Mária Kopp said in her book "The Ways and Mazes of the Search for Happiness", which can now be read in English: "The role of family and marriage has never been more important for the quality of life, balance and the tolerable social atmosphere of the individual and the next generation than in modern society."

The volume is now available in English in the e-library of KINCS under: konyvtar.koppmariaintezet.hu
