Hungarians belong together, wherever they live in the world
Every Hungarian child is a treasure, wherever they are born in the world, according to 85 percent of Hungarians – among others, this was revealed by the most recent representative survey of the Mária Kopp Institute for Demography and Families (KINCS). 83% of respondents believe that a common mother tongue and culture connects all Hungarians. The survey, conducted on a sample of 1,000 people, focused on issues related to Hungarians living beyond the borders.
Even 103 years after the Treaty of Trianon, the idea of national unity is still strong in Hungary, and according to the opinion of Hungarian people, the nation does not end at our borders, but extends beyond them. Hungarians live with the idea of the Fundamental Law that “Hungary bears responsibility for the fate of Hungarians living outside its borders, bearing in mind the unity of the Hungarian nation”.
Three-quarters (76%) of those surveyed by the KINCS believe that all Hungarians belong together, wherever they live in the world. The support of Hungarians living beyond the borders is important for the majority, with only one-fifth of respondents refusing this idea. According to six out of ten respondents, Hungarian communities living in the Carpathian Basin should primarily be helped to stay in place, and they should be supported more than Hungarians living elsewhere in the world. According to every second respondent, the support of Hungarians abroad is in our common national interest, and they also agreed that assistance should be provided for the return of Hungarians who have left the country.
According to the research of KINCS, four out of ten Hungarians have Hungarian acquaintances living in the Carpathian Basin outside of the Hungarian border, while six out of ten people have Hungarian acquaintances living in another country (57%). 62% of the respondents would be happy if their acquaintance moved back to Hungary, and every second person thinks that they should be supported in this regard.
Since 2018, the support of Hungarian families abroad has been implemented via the Umbilical Cord programme, where they can apply for maternity support and open a baby bond for every Hungarian child born, just like in Hungary. The families of more than 48,000 Hungarian newborns abroad have already benefited from these family supports.
Hungary is a family-friendly country, where Hungarian families living abroad are valued, and where our compatriots living outside the borders are important for those living in the motherland.
Methodology: The nationwide representative survey was conducted by telephone interviewing 1,000 people among the adult Hungarian population between May 17 and June 1, 2023.
