Hungarians are in favor of government measures
The vast majority of Hungarians support the most important government measures that affect their daily lives. Supporting families, reducing overheads, curbing illegal migration as well as the protecting children are generally accepted in the society. According to most of the Hungarians, the tax refund for families (88%), the 13th month pension (86%), the minimum wage increase (85%) as well as the personal income tax exemption for young people (84%) are good rather than bad for Hungary and the Hungarian people as shown by the latest research of the Maria Kopp Institute for Demography and Families (KINCS). According to a representative survey of 1,000 people carried out between 5th-13th January 2022, respondents broadly agree with the most important, significant measures of the government.
Recently, a number of critical voices have been heard from the opposition over a number of key government measures. The Maria Kopp Institute was curious about what Hungarians think about these issues, so they asked them about nine measures that they thought were more or less good for the Hungarian people and for Hungary in general. The results speak for themselves, as all nine measures are supported by an overwhelming majority of the respondents.
Do you think that the following measure is rather good or rather bad for the Hungarian people, Hungarian families and Hungary in general?
%, (N = 1000)
The survey found that tax refund for families (88%) and 13th month pension (86%) were the most popular measures. Raising the minimum wage and curbing illegal migration are also especially important for the Hungarian people - in both cases, support is 85 percent; and 84 percent agree with the introduction of personal income tax exemptions for young people under the age of 25. The support of families and the protection of children and families are also decisive: the former is supported by 83 percent of respondents and the latter by 82 percent. The popularity of overhead costs reduction remains undiminished (78%) and 8 out of 10 respondents support the freezing of petrol prices.
Results show that with the higher educational attainment and the larger settlement of the place of residence, the number of sceptics increases slightly, but even in their case there is an exceptionally high support of around 75-80 percent.
It is a particularly interesting fact of the survey that among those who consider themselves to be critical of government there are three to four times more people who are more likely to agree with government measures than those who reject them. For example, even two-thirds of government critics agree with the protection of children and families, only one-fifth do not, and one-sixth are uncertain about the issue. Government critics are most likely to identify with tax refund for families (75%) and least with overhead costs reduction (55%), although there are still more supporters, while the proportion of uncertain ones among them is relatively high, at around 15%.
It can be seen from the KINCS research that the Hungarian people are largely in agreement and supportive of the government's measures, and there is no doubt about the widespread public support for the mentioned measures.
Methodology: The national representative survey was conducted by interviewing 1,000 people among the adult population by telephone between 5th-13th January 2022.
