Since the beginning of the family-friendly governance in 2010, women of childbearing age have given birth to more children, the desire to have children and the number of births per thousand women have also increased, according to the publication of the Mária Kopp Institute for Demography and Families (KINCS) issued for Mother's Day. It is a positive development that siblings are now born closer in time, the number of children born in wedlock has increased and more and more families have had third children in the last 10 years.

While the fertility rate, which expresses the desire to have children, was 1.25 in 2010, by 2019 it had already risen to 1.49. The number of births per 1,000 women aged 15-49 increased by 6 percent, while the number of births per 1,000 women aged 20-39 increased by 14 percent.

The number of women of childbearing age, aged 15-49, has fallen by more than 7 percent to 160,000 since 2010. The largest fell, by a total of 16.5 percent, was experienced in the 20-39 age group, which is giving birth to most children. Despite the aforementioned, the number of births increased between 2014 and 2017 compared to 2010 and was only 1.3 percent lower in 2019.
The average age of women giving birth in Hungary increased only slightly compared to 2010, from 29.8 to just over 30. Women continue to give birth to their first child at an average age of 28 years. In addition, the proportion of mothers over the age of 40 has doubled.

After 2015, the number of children born in wedlock increased again, with nearly 60 percent of babies being parents of married couples. The number of newborns born as third children increased to the highest extent compared to 2010.

The time between the births of siblings has decreased, especially since the introduction of GYED Extra in 2014. By now, the average time between the birth of siblings has dropped to less than 4 years for spouses, with nearly half of the babies being born with their siblings being under the age of three.

Most births were registered in the Central and Northern Hungarian region, with increase experienced only in the countryside, while the number of births in Budapest decreased. Based on mothers' educational attainment, the largest increase since 2010 has been among those with secondary education, while the largest decline has been observed among those with lower education with stagnation among mothers having completed higher education.

Since 2010, the uptake of employment-related benefits among childcare benefits has increased and the employment of mothers with small children has been steadily rising, indicating an increase in the proportion of mothers active in the labour market.
